Final Fractions Theory 2025
Final Fractions are a popular handicapping tool for identifying contenders. Instead of looking at the overall time, handicappers often pay close attention to how fast the horses run at the end of the race—these are the “final fractions.”
Think of a horse race as a story. The beginning and middle parts tell you about the pace and positioning, but the final fraction – typically the last furlong (1/8th of a mile) or sometimes the last two furlongs (1/4 of a mile) – often reveals the horse’s stamina, determination, and overall class.
Why are they important?
- Stamina Check: A fast final fraction suggests a horse has the stamina to maintain speed over the Derby distance.
- Late Kick: A fast final fraction can indicate a horse with a powerful late run.
Things to keep in mind (Use with other Handicapping)
- Trip: A horse stuck behind others and weaving through traffic might have a slower final fraction despite having more in the tank.
- Pace of the Race: A very slow early pace can lead to faster final fractions as horses have more energy left.
The Bottom Line:
They offer insights into a horse’s stamina and capacity to finish strong. Although they are not the only factor to consider, when combined with other handicapping techniques, they can help identify contenders.
