2018 Jerome Stakes Preview

The 2018 road to the Kentucky Derby starts with the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct.  Historically the Jerome has had minimal impact on the Kentucky Derby as many of the higher profile colts are on vacation or down in Florida preparing for the February preps.

Contenders:

Seven Trumpets dominated a maiden race and then followed up with a sharp score in an allowance.  Back to back Brisnet speed figures of 92 and 93 and tactical speed to sit in the pocket and make a move entering the turn. Has a nice turn of foot and may have some upside as he stretches out.

Firenze Fire is the “Class” of the race with a Grade 1 Champagne victory.  The Champagne was a race that featured multiple moves and Firenze Fire came late to tag the eventual BC Juvenile winner Good Magic.  Beware of only two works since Breeders Cup Juvenile.  His Breeders Cup race can be tossed as it was reported he spiked a fever that week after shipping.  Pedigree is leaning towards speed. Firenze Fire is the most likely favorite.

Honor Up improved dramatically in his last outing and dominated in the stretch off slow fractions.  The son of To Honor and Serve had pressed the pace in quicker fractions at sprint distances.  The possibility exists he sets slow fractions and makes his move on the turn.

Fair Odds Line:

Firenze Fire 8/5

Seven Trumpets 5/2

The Selection:

Seven Trumpets in this spot with the tactical speed and could get the first jump going into the second turn. Firenze Fire may not have recovered from shipping West.
